4 Foods That Can Help Whiten Your Teeth

Wokingham Smiles

It is a recognized fact that many foods and some drinks such as red wine or coffee can have a negative impact on the appearance of your teeth. Surprisingly then, you may be interested to know that there are a number of foods that can actually help to whiten your teeth. Here, we review four favourites which can help to keep your smile bright.

Dark Chocolate

Moderate consumption of dark chocolate (with a high cocoa content; 75 to 80 per cent or more) is well known for its potential health benefits, due to a high anti-oxidant content. Another of its ingredients that is not usually as well known is theobromine. This alkaloid serves to harden tooth enamel, making it thicker and harder so that the teeth appear whiter. In addition, dark chocolate also contains tannin which reduces bacteria sticking to teeth and so protects the enamel surfaces, which helps to maintain a good appearance.

Apples & Pears

If you like fruit, we recommend apples and pears as these also have good smile-whitening properties. The old adage “an apple a day keeps the dentist away” is in fact true because these crunchy and watery fruits help to clean and toughen the gums. Gum health is important as tooth loss in adults is often attributable to poor gum health. Eating apples and pears increases saliva production and reduces bacteria, consequently helping to protect against plaque (which yellows teeth) – and against halitosis, commonly known as bad breath.

Strawberries

Strawberries are beneficial as they contain malic acid, an enzyme which acts as an astringent and makes teeth appear whiter. Some teeth-whitening amateur enthusiasts even prepare a paste with a mixture of mashed strawberries and sodium bicarbonate. We recommend a more practical and nutritional approach of mixing strawberries in your breakfast cereal, morning snack, salads or desserts. It is important to note that strawberries are the only berries which help whiten teeth – others can cause stains.

Cheese

Finally, cheese is a valuable food. Rich in calcium which is good for all bones, it also decreases acidity in the mouth and reduces tooth erosion, and the discolouring which this can cause.

Of course, there is arguably no more effective method of whitening teeth than safe and modern professional techniques as offered by our dentists based on your dental health and preferences.
